Long Drivers of Australia began in 2003. Between June and September 2003 we brought to Australia the RE/MAX Australian Long Drive Championships. Finally Australia was on the world Long Drive Calendar and part of the World Championship series.
In 2004 we ran the second season of the RE/MAX Australian Long Drive Championships. The same year we also introduced the elite Pinnacle Australasian Long Drive Tour, and the Long Drive State Shield.
Having such an affiliation with Long Drive we looked at what was being used in Long Drive world wide. SMT Drivers were the emerging equipment of choice for long driving and the combination had just been used to win the 2002 Open and Senior Men's World Long Drive Championships. As we wanted to only stock and sell the best of the best, the decision was easy -we became SMT distributors in Australia. In fact we stock exclusively SMT as we aren't interested in anything but the best.
In August 2004 we became the Australian Master Distributors for SMT. We are proud to be associated with SMT as they are the highest quality product and a truly great company.

The SMT Story...(Mike Tait)
I started in the golf business since 1978 in the PGA Program, and the component business full time since 1987, I was introduced to the world of Professional Long Drive, through my longtime friend Jody Baucom, President of AccuFLEX Golf Shafts., at the 2001 World Long Drive Finals in Mesquite Nevada.
Now is a good time to let everyone know that, originally, I was in the "clone" business, when it came to components. I was dead certain that if I could sell the same products that everyone wanted at a lower price, the world would march to my door. Amazingly enough, they did! After my fourth "Cease & Desist" letter from major OEM lawyers, and having a young son, I decided that this wasn't worth the trouble any longer. Fortunately enough, it was at almost the same time that the component industry decided the same thing. Clones were dying out, and I changed along with it.
In the fall of 2001, killing two birds with one stone, while visiting my parents in Las Vegas I decided to head over and see the world's longest hitters in Mesquite. I met up with Jody and witnessed the success he was having in his first World Finals, with his then "fledgling" company AccuFLEX. I was introduced as a "component guy" and immediately was given feedback on the needs of the hitters present.
Their comments were amazing to hear.....
"Why can't anyone make a head that does not break"?
"I only get 5 hits out of this club before the face flattens"
"They sent me 5 heads, and all were different specs"
It was that very weekend that I knew what I needed to do. I knew that if there was anyone who could make true precision equipment, even equipment that would simply not break, I would be successful.
At dinner, I found myself writing on napkins while they talked about what they liked out of their equipment, making little drawings of shapes and such. The date; October 19th 2001 .
It was all over, AccuFLEX shafts made a great showing in their first year in the business, and I was taken in by all the excitement.
I came back home and immediately started on the original 7 heads. The first six came pretty easily, through all of the notes that I took at those dinners. The clubs looked great, but I noticed that there was not anything that I , as a player, was really in love with. So, I decided that #7 was going to be everything that I liked in a head.... the Shinnecock was the result. Oddly enough, I was certain that it would be the first club that I discontinued... I mean, who would like what I liked?
I finally received the heads on February 12th 2002, almost four months later.
Instantly, there was about 50% of the guys on the LDA Tour that didn't like the way the Shinnecock hit, it leaked to the right. I changed the design for the first time. Still, 20% of the guys still hated it.... A third redesign was needed, and the results now seem almost "legendary". All this took place in under 7 months.
I take a trip overseas every year to keep my face, fresh, in the factory owner's minds, to promote good will and get the latest in industry news. I take great pride in the quality of the SMT line, and have always said that "Metal Technology" is where the big changes should be. I know how much effort I put into the relationships that I have in Asia and I couldn't do it without their help.
SMT clubs are not for long drivers only! The technology that was created to keep the hardest swingers happy, is the same thing that "everyday" players need. Consistent weights, lofts, colors and materials. I have just happened to put them together in a fashion that keeps them as close to the .830 COR as the rules of golf allow, without the traditional component company pitfalls, and the long drivers love them. The clubs simply stay together! There is nothing worse for a clubmaker, than seeing a customer pull up and open his trunk. There is NEVER anything good that is going to come out of that trunk! It only means that there was a problem with their club.
The name - SMT , Oddly enough, my son's initials are SMT, Sean Michael Tait, and he thinks it is really cool to have clubs named after him.
He is the biggest joy in my life, and I am truly thrilled that I can wear his initials on my hat with the pride that I feel for him and my product.
I Thank you all for your support! The links on the top should now be up on your computer, enjoy the clubs, and remember...
"Swing hard, you might hit something"
